Line by Line summarized meaning of the sanskrit verses in Shivananda Lahari discourse

Day 13 - August 10 - verse 24 and 25

Verse 24

In this verse Bhagavad pādacharya prays to the Lord to bless Him with sāmeepya mukti - a chance to live in His presence.

Kada vā kailāse kanaka mani soudhe saha ganāih,
Rvasan Shambhoragre sphuta-ghatitha-baddhānjali-phutah
Vibho sāmba swāmin paramashiva pāheeti nigadan
Vidhātrunām kalpān kshanamiva vineshyāmi sukhatah

Kada vā Kailāse - When will I ever live with you in Kailasa

At some point of time or other I know You will allow me to live there
Kailasa = kila + āsa. Atra āsa kila - He is here only. As Ganga flows from there, it is called Kailasa. Where in Kailasa is His residence?

Kanaka mani soudhe - in your house that is made of gems (mani) and gold and is painted with amruta (sudha). It is white in colour and for this reason too it is addressed as sudha.

Saha ganāih - along with Your ganas

Your ganas eternally sing your glory so to live amongst them is my fortune. At one point of time King Yayati was thrown out of heaven. At that time he prayed that he should fall amidst the company of holy men. This satsang, he believed would enable him to quickly become eligible for a postion in heaven.

Vasan Shambhor agre - living in front of You (agre), within Your vicinity and

Sphuta ghatitha baddānjali phutah - eternally keeping my folded hands (anjali) above my head in reverence praying to You

Each mudra has a great significance and ability to change the life of the person. Joining the hands together as in namaskara is known as anjaliputa mudra. This resembles a lotus that is not yet bloomed. We are showing this lotus to the Lord. The 10 fingers represent the 10 directions i.e. 8 direction + urdhva and athava lokas. We tell Him that all the directions are in His control (adheena) and hence we do not know his exact location at that time. ‘Wherever You are, I offer you my obeisance’- is the intent behind this mudra. You, who reside in the 10 directions, I offer you 10 namaskaras - daśa prachir dasa .. rudram.

This mudra is of immense power. With this our doshas disappear and we are blessed with jnana. In this mudra, 8 fingers are pointed upwards and two fingers are pointed toward our self. our intellect is focusing upwards (urdhva). It means that the jnana from higher lokas is flowing into us through this medium/ mudra. Jnana is being transmitted into us.

Vibhō - O all pervading Lord

Sāmba - O Lord, who is together with amba.

Swāmin - O Lord for every being, the one who absorbs us into yourself

Paramashiva- O Supreme Lord

Pāheethi nigadhan – I should pray to You there (seated right in front of You in Kailasa)

We should pray that we should not fall into ajnana again.

Vidhaathrunam kalpān – An entire kalpa

kshanamiva vineshyāmi sukhatah - will happily and blissfully fly in by in a second when I am in Your presence.

This is the state of sameepya mukti - being in the presence of the Lord. This bliss is the result.

Verse 25

This verse Bhagavad pādacharya seeks sālokya mukti from Shiva- the ability to live on the same plane (loka).

Sthavai rbrahmādeenām jaya-jaya-vachobhir-niryaminām,
Gaṇanam kelībhir-madakala-mahokśasya kakudi,
Sthitam neelagreevam trinayanam-umamślishta-vapusham,
Katha twam paśyeyam kara drutha-mrugam kkhanda paraśum.

Katha twam paśyeyam - When will I see You, O Lord

Sthavai rbrahmādeenām - whose glories are sung by Brahma and other deities

Jaya-jaya-vachobhi-niryaminām – about whom great saints shout victory slogans

Victory to God means victory to us. When our lawyer gets victory, it means our case is solved.

Gaṇanam kelibhir - Whose ganas playfully sing and dance

Madakala mahokśasya kakudi sthitam - Who sits immobile on the *** (kakudhi) of the bull

Neelagreevam - O Lord who has a blue neck

Trinayanam - who has 3 eyes

Umamślishta vapusham - Who is held closely by Uma

Kara drutha-mruga kkhanda paraśum - who holds the deer head and trident in the hands.

Deer head symbolizes our fickle mind which he holds.
I seek to see you in this form in reality. I want to see your three eyes, holding the deer head and trident in your hand, being embraced by Uma, your blue neck. O God bless me with the chance to live in your loka so that I am spend my time with this vision.
