Kaalaagni Shamana Dattatreya

Kaalaagni Shamana Dattatreya

(Avadhoota Datta Peetham's main deity)
Mysore, Karnataka, India

His Holiness Sri Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji of Mysore, one of the greatest spiritual leaders of the present day is an asset to India and the world at large. Sri Swamiji has consecrated 16 Datta Shrines - Shodasha Datta Kshetras representing the sixteen manifestations of Lord Datta in different parts of India. The first of the sixteen temples, Kalagni Shamana Dattatreya temple, is established in the main (root) Ashrama Center at the footsteps of Chamundi hill in the historical city of Mysuru, also hailed as the cultural capital of Karnataka.

During the installation in 1978, Sri Swamiji said that Datta Peetham follows the Guru Tattva tradition started in the Dattatreya era and the present temple is just a continuation of that legacy. This is the primordial & central seat of entire concept of Datta Peetham’s global reach.

Kalagni Shamana Dattatreya is the presiding deity. June 4th to June 11th, 1978 would remain as one of the most historic and memorable weeks in the growth of Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Ashram for no other reason than that the divine descent of Lord Datta in the form of Sri Kaalagni Shamana Dattatreya took place on 9th June 1978. It was a week long ceremony. Several times in that week, Sri Swamiji entered into Samadhi state.

Before the temple was built, a large stage occupied that place and it was called as Saraswati Peetha and sometimes as Narayana Peetha. After the Datta Temple was built, Ashrama began to be called as Avadhoota Datta Peetham.

It was during that week that Sri Swamiji introduced Datta worship to HIS followers. Datta Stava and the greeting JAYA GURU DEVA DATTA were also introduced during that week. The greeting JAYA GURU DEVA DATTA slowly transformed into JAYA GURU DATTA in the mid-eighties.

As per Sri Swamiji's divine resolution, on Rama Navami day, 21st April 2002, the idol of Lord Datta was relocated to the Centre of the Prayer hall and the Kumbhabhishekam of the new temple and re-consecration of the Datta idol took place.

The Datta temple opens daily at 6 AM. Daily Abhishekam, Archana, Ashtottara Seva are performed to Lord Dattatreya. Tailabhisheka ritual or oil anointing is performed every Sunday to Kalagni Shamana Datta. Every evening, devotees gather in the Universal Prayer Hall, perform Divya Naama Sankeertana (singing the divine names and glories of God) and Kakada Arati - a specific form of Arati that involves lighting of 16 lamps in front of Lord Datta by extolling his glories.
